Friends of the Library FAQ

The Friends support many facets of the Fairfield County District Library. Friends activities include:

  • Sponsoring children's programs and activities to offer positive reading and learning experiences.
  • Providing volunteer support to library staff and purchasing needed equipment.
  • Serving as advocates for adequate funding of public libraries.
  • Promoting community awareness of library services.

How are the Friends Funded?

The Friends are funded by memberships, donations, memorial gifts, book sales and fundraisers. The Friends of the Library are a nonprofit, educational organization 501(c)(3) so any amount you donate over the $3.00 individual membership is a charitable contribution and is tax-deductible.

How do the Friends operate?

The Friends Board of Trustees is elected from the membership and meets once a month. Officers are elected. Some members volunteer to chair special events, coordinate committees, assist with activities and volunteer in the Friends bookstore, Books & Such.

Why join the Friends of the Library?

  1. Join to help promote and expand the Fairfield County District Library's service to the community.
  2. Join to receive the Friends of the Library newsletter with advance notice of upcoming events.
  3. Join to receive 10% discount on all purchases in the Friends of the Library bookstore.
  4. Join to attend "Friends Only" book sales.
  5. Join and become eligible to win a $25 certificate for the Friends of the Library Bookstore (one awarded each month to a Friend).
  6. Join to enjoy an annual fall meeting with Friends, food and fun.
  7. Join to receive the satisfaction of knowing you support an institution that provides lifelong learning and can improve the lives of all who choose to use it.

What does membership in the Friends of the Library cost?

All members of the Friends of the Fairfield County District Library receive a quarterly newsletter, a 10% discount on purchases at Books & Such, and invitations to special "Friends only" events. The following levels of membership are available:

  • $3.00 - Older Adult (55 & over)
  • $5.00 - Individual Bookworm
  • $10.00 - Family of Book Lovers
  • $25.00 - Limited Editions
  • $50.00 - Rare Books
  • $100.00 - First Editions

How can I join the Friends of the Library?

Pick up an application at any Fairfield County District Library or download an application here to print, complete and mail, along with your membership dues, to:

How can Friends' members become actively involved?

The following are some of the fun ways to become involved in the Friends and support your library:

  • Volunteer in Friends Bookstore at Main Library
  • Assist with book sales at branch libraries
  • Serve on special event planning committee
  • Serve as host/hostess for special event
  • Help prepare and serve refreshments for special event
  • Cook or bake at home.
  • Make telephone calls
  • Assist with newsletter and publicity
  • Assist with preparation of mailings
  • Serve on Friends Board of Trustees
  • Pick up book donations and deliver to Bookstore/Main Library.
  • Volunteer hours in the Main Library's third floor gallery
